Join codes

A join code is how you let a group of people into a team without naming each one. Hand it out, and whoever uses it joins.

That is also its weakness: a join code is a bearer credential, so whoever ends up holding it gets in. When you want specific people and nobody else, send an invite instead.

The two codes

Every team has two codes. Each is rotated and switched on or off on its own.

CodeJoins you asWho can see and manage it
Member join codeMemberAny admin, and the owner
Admin join codeAdminThe owner only

Members see neither code.

Share the admin code sparingly. Anyone holding it can build forms, read submissions and spend the team's credits.

What a code looks like

Eight characters, letters and digits. The characters 0, O, 1, I and L are never used, so a code read out over the phone cannot be misheard.

Lower case, spaces and dashes are all accepted when someone types it.

Sharing it

Open the team on the Team page. Next to each code:

ButtonCopies
Copy iconThe code on its own
Copy invite linkA link of the form /join/<code>

The link opens the join screen with the code already filled in. Someone who is signed out is asked to sign in or create an account first, then lands back on the join screen.

Joining with a code

Choose Join a team on the Team page, or open a /join/<code> link.

As soon as the code is complete, the screen names the team it opens, so nobody joins something they cannot see the name of. If you are already in that team, it says so.

After joining you land on the Team page. If you joined as an admin, the team is now in your workspace switcher.

A code that does not exist and a code that has been switched off give the same message, "That join code isn't valid", so a wrong guess does not tell anyone they were close.

Rotating a code

Rotate replaces the code with a new one. The old code stops working immediately. People who already joined stay in the team.

Rotate a code when it has gone further than you meant it to.

Switching a code off

The Code is active switch turns a code off without changing it. Nobody can join with it while it is off. Switch it back on and the same code works again.

Turn the member code off when the team is complete and you would rather add people one at a time with invites.

Limits

A team holds a limited number of members. Once it is full, codes and invites both stop admitting people. See limits.
